I used Kamal. A deployment tool created by the developers of Basecamp and Hey.
After spending time with this tool, it is time to reflect on the experience.

What I love

You start small, and you can hack your way into more advanced setups. By default the application builds on your machine and you push the image to the remote system on deployment. This makes it all very easy to get started with.

Personal Documentation Website

This post was originally published on therryvanneerven.nl.

Recently, a friend introduced me to a personal documentation website, and I found it inspiring. I often feel the urge to jot down notes that might also benefit others.

However, blogging can feel like too much of a commitment, and blog posts are usually not updated frequently.

So, this afternoon, I decided to take the plunge and create my own documentation website. I’ve populated it with some technical notes and insights about the recent mountainbikes that I’ve owned.

Restore internet radio Denon CEOL N8

This post was originally published on therryvanneerven.nl.

WARNING: At 10/04/2024 the trick mentioned in this article stopped working. I have undone the trick, and now internet radio seems to work with the original settings.

10 year ago Denon released the Denon (CEOL) RCD-N8.
A small network audio system which uses vTuner services for providing internet radio.
I bought this device second hand.

A while ago the internet radio stopped working.
This is my story how I worked around that limitation.

Easy Firefox profile switching on Ubuntu

This post was originally published on therryvanneerven.nl.

As a freelance software engineer, I work for multiple clients.
Often clients provide a notebook. The separation of physical devices makes it easy to separate the work for different clients.
However, in some cases, I bring my own device. This brings challenges to separate the work properly.

I have already figured out a solution by using separate Git and SSH configurations.
However for browsing with Firefox I did not find a good solution yet.

Different Git configuration per directory

This post was originally published on therryvanneerven.nl.

Article is updated at 2023-02-14

I have multiple accounts for GitLab and Github.
The reason for this is that I work for multiple companies and they
require me to use a unique email address and account for those services.

In some cases I perform the development on the same device. So I need to make
sure that I perform my work with the correct account details and SSH credentials.

SFF Workstation Build Notes

This post was originally published on therryvanneerven.nl.

Recently I’ve completed my small form factor PC build.
I started the build of this PC because I was annoyed by the single threaded performance of my notebook.
Now I have a very fast PC which I can take easily with me due to its size of only 4 liters.

It has been about 10 years ago that I’ve built my last PC.
This year I’ve built two PC’s. One of them took 2 hours and this one took almost a month to complete.
I hope the notes below will be helpful or interesting to some of you.

Establising CuriousBits

This post was originally published on therryvanneerven.nl.

It has been only half a year ago that I started at Jibe Company to work on their Data Management Platform and the related projects.

In this period I learned more about data management and visualization by working with a nice group of people in Eindhoven and Cluj.
Also I was able to work on several new solutions which are in active use right now.
So far a very interesting experience and I’m grateful for the opportunity.
